Battery code systems explained

Understand why IEC, ANSI and manufacturer codes can describe the same battery from different directions.

Standards and common names

IEC designations describe standardized electrochemical systems and forms. Common size names and ANSI or manufacturer numbers may coexist on the same package.

Aliases are not guesses

An alias belongs to a canonical profile only when a published cross-reference supports it. Similar-looking codes stay separate until identity is established.

Search strategy

Search the longest complete marking first, including prefixes and suffixes. Use a short numeric code only when that is all the cell provides.

Decision boundary

This guide narrows a battery decision but does not override the device manufacturer’s current manual or safety instructions.
